Alcove Furniture That Fits Perfectly
Chimney breast alcoves are one of the most common architectural features in Newcastle homes — and one of the most commonly wasted. Freestanding bookcases and shelving units never quite fit, leaving gaps at the sides, above, and sometimes below. The alcoves look incomplete because the furniture wasn't designed for the space.
Our alcove cabinets and shelving are measured, designed, and built specifically for your alcoves. Cabinets fill the base from wall to wall with doors or drawers at the front. Floating shelves above create display and storage space up to the ceiling. The result is alcove furniture that looks like an original architectural feature.
We work with alcoves of all sizes and configurations — symmetrical pairs, single alcoves, shallow recesses, deep alcoves, and chimney breasts that aren't centred. Every project is designed individually to work with your room's specific dimensions.
Why Off-the-Shelf Doesn't Work in Alcoves
Standard bookcases and shelving units are manufactured in fixed widths — typically 60cm, 80cm, or 100cm. Your alcoves are almost certainly a different width. The result is a unit that's too narrow (leaving visible gaps) or too wide (requiring an exchange for something even less suitable).
Freestanding furniture in alcoves also looks temporary. It sits in front of the skirting board rather than integrating with it. It doesn't reach the ceiling. It doesn't match the room's architectural style. The overall impression is furniture that's been placed in the alcove rather than designed for it.
Bespoke alcove furniture eliminates these issues. Every dimension is measured to the millimetre. Skirting is scribed around or matched. The finished result is indistinguishable from built-in architecture.
How We Build Your Alcove Furniture
Every pair of alcoves is different. Here's how we ensure yours are fitted perfectly.
Alcove Survey
We measure each alcove at multiple heights — alcoves are rarely perfectly square. We note wall irregularities, skirting profiles, and chimney breast dimensions.
Design
We design cabinets and shelving that work with your alcove's exact dimensions, including shelf heights, door styles, and integration with existing features.
Quote
Clear, itemised pricing for each element — cabinets, shelves, finishes, and installation.
Build
Components are manufactured in our workshop, with scribe edges designed to accommodate wall irregularities.
Installation
Our fitters install everything precisely, scribing to walls and ensuring shelves are level regardless of wall irregularities.
Why Bespoke Alcove Furniture Works
Fills Every Millimetre
Designed to the exact width, depth, and height of each alcove. No gaps, no fillers, no compromises.
Looks Like Original Architecture
Matched skirting, period-appropriate panel styles, and finishes that make the furniture appear built with the house.
Storage Below, Display Above
Cabinets with concealed storage at the base, floating shelves for books and display items above — a practical and beautiful combination.
Any Style or Period
From Victorian panel detailing to contemporary flat-slab designs — we match the character of your room.
Handles Wall Irregularities
Scribe edges accommodate uneven walls, sloping floors, and out-of-square alcoves that standard furniture exposes.
Symmetry Across Unequal Alcoves
Even when your alcoves are different sizes, we design both sides to appear balanced and proportional.
Cabinet Types, Shelving Options & Materials
Alcove cabinets typically feature one or two doors with adjustable internal shelving. Door styles include shaker panels, traditional raised-and-fielded panels, tongue-and-groove, and contemporary flat-slab with push-to-open or handle hardware. We match existing room joinery wherever possible.
Floating shelves are supported by concealed battens fixed into the alcove walls, creating a clean, bracket-free appearance. Shelf thickness, depth, and spacing are all customisable. For heavier loads (books, audio equipment), we use reinforced fixings and thicker shelf construction.
Materials include high-quality FINSA Hidrofugo premium grade MDF with painted finishes (any colour — we regularly match Farrow & Ball and Little Greene), natural wood veneer for a timber look, and high-quality melamine for durability. All hardware uses soft-close mechanisms as standard.
For properties with original period features — particularly common in Jesmond, Heaton, and Gosforth — we take special care to match the skirting profile, architrave style, and door panel proportions. The goal is furniture that looks like it was installed when the house was built, not added a century later.
How Much Do Alcove Cabinets Cost in Newcastle?
Alcove cabinet pricing depends on the size of your alcoves, the style and materials chosen, and whether you want shelving above. We provide detailed quotes after measuring.
A single alcove cabinet with floating shelves above typically costs from £1,000 to £2,000. A pair of matching alcove cabinets with shelving generally ranges from £2,000 to £4,000. Premium finishes and more complex configurations can cost more.
What Affects the Price
- Alcove dimensions (width, depth, height)
- Number of alcoves being fitted
- Cabinet door style and material
- Number and thickness of floating shelves
- Finish and colour (painted, veneer, melamine)
- Wall condition and preparation required
